BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

School of northern France, 17th century.
"Baby Jesus".
In carved and polychrome wood.
Measurements: 17.5 cm (height); 34 cm (total height with base).

Sculpture carved in rounded bulk representing, probably the Baby Jesus, although it could also be a cherub. The carving is of high quality, which can be appreciated in the right turning of the infant limbs, with a tender and soft aspect. The soft twisting of the body and the gesture of the right arm, which comes forward to make an offering, also stand out. But the uniqueness of the piece is concentrated above all in the face, in the sad and melancholic expression conveyed by the eyes, with arched eyebrows and tight mouth, in a pouting outline. This is impregnated with a deep naturalism, characteristic of the carvings of the baroque period.
