BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of ewers. France, 19th century.
"Sea" and "Earth".
In black patinated bronze.
Measurements: 51,5 cm. height.

Pair of nineteenth-century ewers in patinated bronze, with a profusion of sculptural motifs worked in relief, some of them in almost round bulk, almost exempt. In one of them, a newt crowns the pitcher clutching the sinuous mouth. In the other jar, a satyr adopts the same gesture. The rest of the decoration is in keeping with each of the characters: marine motifs in the first, Bacchic theme in the second. Thus, dolphins, mermaids and masks representing sea gods and oceanic monsters run around the exterior body of the first ewer. Elements of rockwork, scallops, conches and all kinds of seashells complete the decoration. The cartouche is held by a triton. The other ewer is decorated with putti and masks of Dionysus, satyrs and fauns, jungle animals and different products of the earth as well as bunches of grapes. They are a pair of ewers in which rococo exuberance coexists with neoclassical taste. These are bronzes of great quality and originality.
