This fountain mask takes the form of a Renaissance dolphin head. The representation of dolphins in Renaissance times has its roots in the classical world, although it differs greatly from the real appearance of dolphins as we know them today. They used to be interpreted as marine animals similar to a large fish, with voluptuous lips and an intimidating gesture.
