Measurements: 32 x 24 x 23 cm (bust height); 12 x 15 x 15 x 15 cm (pedestal). 46 cm (total height).
This head of Seneca is based on the Roman sculpture made at the end of the 1st century BC that was discovered in the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum in 1754. Although it was initially presumed to represent Seneca the Younger, as his emaciated features were assumed to reflect his Stoic philosophy, contemporary scholars claim that it may be a fictitious portrait (even intended to represent Hesiod or Aristophanes).
