DESCRIPTION
"Sacred Heart", XIX century.
Marble.
Measurements: 103 x 50 x 30 cm.
Sculpture carved in white marble and round bulk. It represents Christ in the invocation of the Sacred Heart. The figure of Christ is imposing. Full body and slender waist, rests his bare feet on a pedestal that symbolizes the orb and opens his arms showing the palms of his hands open, protective. On the chest stands out the carved heart, typical of this iconography. She wears a simple tunic and a naturalistic draped mantle. Her open hands are stylized, harmonizing with the high waist and monumental presence. On the chest stands out the heart typical of this iconography. It also highlights the nobility of the face, serene and idealized.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a late iconography, officially consecrated in 1685 as a symbol of the meeting of Protestantism and Jansenism, of God's love for all men, without exceptions. The theme will definitively enter Catholic iconography in the 18th century, and it will do so in two plastic forms: as a flaming heart applied externally on the chest of Jesus or as rays of light emanating from an incision practiced on his chest, on the side of the heart.
