Christ. Northern Italy, 17th century.
Carved and polychrome wood.
Presents original polychromy.
Presents a loss of a phalanx in one hand.
Measurements: 44 x 32 cm.
Expiring Christ with three nails. The figure, completely carved in wood, adopts a soft contrapposto that prints a stylised classicism to the canon. Despite representing the moment of maximum suffering, the face and body show no trace of tension. The expression of the face concentrates on the moment of abandonment of the Son in the bosom of the Father. The half-opened lips, the lowered head and the sunken eyes connote this moment of surrender. The purity cloth adds a dynamic note to the restful whole. In terms of technique, this piece is entirely made from a single piece of wood, with the exception of the arms, which, due to the limitations of the piece, have been worked on separately and then assembled. The making of the figure of Christ has a long tradition in the history of art.
