BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Renaissance school; mid-sixteenth century.
"Risen Christ".
Polychrome carved wood.
Presents faults in the carving.
Measurements: 33 x 14 x 10 cm; 7.5 x 11 x 18 cm (base).
Round sculpture made of carved and polychrome wood, presenting the risen Christ, a Triumphant Savior who rises from the tomb, although in this particular case the tomb is not preserved. Christ is represented half-naked, covered only with the "perizonium" or cloth of purity with which he was crucified, although on his left shoulder hangs a mantle of voluminous folds and whitish tone, color of purity, both cloths show signs of golden ornamentation, which has been lost due to the passage of time. The figure, which does not retain the arms, shows a great dynamism due to its gesture with the foot forward and the hip slightly bent, reminiscent to a great extent of the movement generated by the well-known praxitelica curve. In addition, the mantle that covers her shoulder stands out for the folds that generate waves and bring greater monumentality to the figure, although in a fluid way. In the case of the figure, it shows a classical and serene conception, where only the wound on the side stands out, which has been recreated by the artist in an elegant way without exacerbated dramatism. The gesture of the face, although sad due to the frown, preserves the restraint and balance of the Renaissance school. The piece was originally conceived to be part of a larger ensemble and to be contemplated from the front, since the work has not been worked on the back.
The sculpture reflects perhaps better than other artistic fields this desire to return to the classical Greco-Roman world that exalts the individuality of man, creating a new style whose vitality surpasses mere copying.
