This is a striking design due to the contrast between the classically inspired elements, specifically of the Empire style, with an avant-garde finish. The juxtaposition of elements is inspiring and daring. The metal frame combines claw feet, sabre back legs and unfurled wings of a bird with a plush red upholstered seat, as does the cylindrical drum-shaped backrest.

Artist, sculptor, furniture maker, lighting designer and engineer, Mark Brazier-Jones was born in New Zealand in 1956 and moved to the UK at the age of 12. After graduating with a degree in Ceramic Sculpture, Brazier-Jones began working in the music video industry. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she designed and built sets for the likes of David Bowie, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Freddy Mercury and Elton John.In 1987 she conceived her first limited edition chair, the Wingback, which sold out before the start of 1988. Brazier-Jones' work is in major museum collections around the world, including the Victoria & Albert in London, the Museum of Art & Design in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as many important private collections.
