Suspension lamp manufactured by Kartell from a 1959 design by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The mid-century space-age style lamp is formally composed of two parts, the metal frame element and the translucent plastic umbrella elements in red (methacrylate). The metal as a load-bearing element is only seen in the upper part of the hemicycle lamp. The diffuser cap is white.

Castiglioni studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and graduated in 1937. In that year he began architectural design practices with his brother Livio and Luigi Caccia Dominioni. After World War II, he and Livio worked with his younger brother Achille, who had graduated in architecture in 1944. Much of their work focused on product and exhibition design, but they also undertook a number of architectural projects, including the 1952-1953 reconstruction of the Palazzo della Permanente. Throughout his career he has been awarded important prizes, such as the Disseny de Barcelona in 1993. His work is currently represented in leading museums such as the MoMA in New York.
