BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

BOB & DRIES VAN DEN BERGHE (Belgium) for Tranekaer, Denmark.
Set of six "Iris" chairs with arms. Design 1982. Later production.
Cherry wood, black plaster upholstery.
Measurements: 112 x 52 x 50 cm.

The stunningly designed Iris chair was launched in 1982, originally produced by Van den Berghe-Pauvers (Belgium). Since 2000, it has been produced by Tranekaer Furniture of Denmark. Bob & Dries Van den Berghe (brothers born in Ghent) conceived an elegant and functional design, supreme in the essentiality of its forms. They are endowed with great personality by the subtly undulating wooden slat that describes a line of continuity linking backrest and support. The resulting organicity provides fluidity and a handcrafted finish. The triangular seat also rests on two front legs joined to the ribbed armrests.

The "Iris" chairs became a classic of postmodern design, enjoying the same success as the Cirkante dining table and the Orquidia chairs, also characterized by their organic and formal essentialism. Belgian designers Dries and Bob Van den Berghe won many accolades and awards, mainly for their furniture from the 1970s and 1980s.
