Pair of Vienna porcelain vases decorated with delicate flowers "à la brindille" and enhanced with gold. Both pieces, with identical characteristics, stand on quadrangular bases on which the concave feet rest. Ear handles emerge from their main bodies and are covered with lids.
In 1718, Claudius Innocentius du Paquier took an immense risk and brought the secret of how to make porcelain from Meissen to Vienna. In recognition of his achievements, Emperor Charles VI granted him the special privilege of being Vienna's first and only porcelain manufacturer. In 1744, the manufactory became the imperial property of Empress Maria Theresa. From then on, the blue striped shield of the coat of arms of the Dukes of Austria under the enamel was used to confirm authenticity. Production followed the latest rococo trend. The manufacture enjoyed a golden age between 1784 and 1805 under the direction of Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal. This "artistic period" of classicism celebrated a return to the straight lines and artistic styles of antiquity. During the Biedermeier era, Viennese porcelain became a status symbol for middle-class aspirations. National and international competition forced the famous firm to close in 1864. Its extensive collection of designs was donated to the Museum of Art and Industry (now the MAK).
