DESCRIPTION

Table clock with garnish; France, third quarter of the nineteenth century.
Gilt bronze and enameled porcelain.
It has Brocot suspension.
It shows wear in the gilding and does not retain pendulum.
Signed Samuel Martí (machinery).
Measurements: 63.5 x 47 x 18 cm (clock); 51 x 25.5 x 24 cm (candlesticks).
Garnish for fireplace composed of a clock and two candlesticks made in bronze on bases supported on chamfered legs. In the case of the candelabra, these have the same design raised on pedestals from where a large shaft decorated as a classic cup with a crowned body starts. From this area there are five lights located around the central finial, which is another light, although elevated in height with respect to the others. In the case of the clock, the legs have the same design as that of the candelabra, on the base is the body where the case is located with a white dial that has Roman numerals in cobalt blue in cartouches and black hands that enhance the contrast. This area is flanked by two figures designed as caryatids located at the corners. They support an entablature that ends in the form of a classic cup adorned with a garland.

These types of pieces reached great popularity during the 19th century, becoming an object of luxury and social significance. Destined to the upper zone of the fireplaces, these sets were usually located in the visitors' room, so that their quality and good taste distinguished the taste of their owner.

COMMENTS
