DESCRIPTION
GERMÁN GÓMEZ NIEDERLEYTNER, (Valencia, last third of the 19th century).
"Lady with mask".
Oil on panel.
Signed in the upper right corner.
Measurements: 24 x 18 cm, 43.50 x 38.50 cm (frame).
The painter Germán Gómez Niederleytner was formed in the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, in Valencia, where he was a disciple of Francisco Domingo. He specialized in genre painting and portraiture, and also cultivated drawing, publishing his works in "La Ilustración Artística" and other magazines of the time. He is currently represented in the collection of the Diputación de Valencia. Traditionally, Spanish painting and literature have been interested in popular customs and types. The arrival of romanticism enlivened this current, bringing to the Hispanic tradition the vision that foreigners had of our people, due to the snobbery of a Europeanizing and liberal national bourgeoisie that, also by foreign influence and under the romantic fashion, turns its eyes to the people and the monuments of the past.
