Donatello's David is one of the most famous sculptures of the Italian Renaissance. Executed around 1440, it has had a significant impact on the history of art. Donatello used the lost wax casting technique to create the statue, which allowed for fine details and a smooth surface. The copy we show, also in bronze and close in size to the original, makes him slightly taller than an average teenager. The statue depicts David, the young biblical shepherd boy who defeated the giant Goliath. He is portrayed nude except for a garlanded hat and boots, which was unusual for depictions of David. He appears in a relaxed, naturalistic pose, with one leg slightly bent and one hand on his hip. He holds Goliath's sword in one hand, while his foot rests on Goliath's decapitated head. David's expression is calm and confident, in contrast to the ferocity of the battle he has just fought. The sculpture symbolizes the victory of wit and faith over brute force, a common theme in the Renaissance. David was an important symbol for the city of Florence, which saw itself as a brave little David against the Goliaths of more powerful states.
