The pair of watercolors that we now bid have been made by a topographical draftsman probably based in the city of Rome. It is a pair of works influenced by the current of Vedutism representing the Basilica of Santa Maria in Domnica and the fountain of Navicella al Celio and the Ponte Milvio with the entrance arch Valadier. Many of the landscapes of Rome painted in the 18th century were imaginary views, or vedute, in which the artist often showed the city as it should have been, rather than as it actually was. The term "vedutism" itself defines a pictorial genre based on the representation of places in which buildings are present, sometimes populated by a more or less numerous number of characters. Therefore, the protagonist of the painting is the urban landscape, always represented according to the laws of perspective.
