DESCRIPTION

Persian Isfahan rug. Iran, ca. 1960-1970.
Hand-knotted wool and silk. 900,000 knots/m2.
Signed: "Said Atarian".
Measurements: 108 x 71 cm.

Handmade carpet, which presents a field of white ivory color, on which floral themes and birds of paradise of great formal and chromatic exuberance are developed. The whole presents an ornamentation based on fine stems and plant ornaments that grow in a capricious way but are completed with a symmetrical arrangement. The border is composed of a single band, in which sinuous and flowery bouquets also grow. Contrasting tones dominate: blues, reds, greens... in contrast with whites and ochers.

Isfahan is a city in Iran known for being one of the most famous places in relation to the production of Persian carpets. On many occasions these carpets have been erroneously called Polish, because of the trade route established from Persia to France, which passed through Poland. They are characterized by their high quality, made of silk or cotton and wool, which is finely trimmed. Their decoration is based on the use of traditional motifs, inspired by the architecture and tiles of the area, although aesthetic patterns of poetic inspiration also stand out. Soft colors and pastel tones are often used.
