BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Travel bag; mid-nineteenth century.
Leather.
Inscribed JFK.
It has sealing wax seals.
Measurements: 42 x 54 x 29 cm.
A 19th century travel bag was an indispensable accessory for travelers, traders and explorers of the time. Generally made of strong leather, waxed canvas or thick fabrics, its design sought to combine durability with a certain elegance. These bags usually had a metal frame at the top opening, similar to that of doctor's bags, which allowed for easy opening and closing. Some included adjustable straps, reinforced carry handles and small interior or exterior compartments for storing documents, money or toiletries.
At a time when travel was long and often uncomfortable, travel bags were essential for transporting personal belongings safely. Unlike large trunks, which were used to store large amounts of clothing and bulky items, these bags were more manageable and allowed quick access to essentials. They were especially useful for frequent travelers, such as merchants, diplomats and explorers, who needed practical and easy-to-carry luggage. In addition, their manufacture in resistant materials protected the contents from dust, humidity and shocks during journeys in carriages, trains or ships.
This type of bag evolved over time, giving rise to the modern handbags and suitcases that we still use today.
