DESCRIPTION
Vessel for lime powder. Indonesia, East Java, ca. 500 B.C. - 300 A.D.

Measurements: 17.4 cm.
Cylindrical vessel topped in the form of a mask-like human face. It presents a stylized classical design with large bulbous eyes, defined mouth and nose and rolled ears. The top and bottom of the vessel are decorated with geometric borders.
Bronze vessels of this type were used to store lime powder, the basic ingredient for a "betel kit" along with betel leaf and areca nut. These vessels show that betel chewing dates back to ancient times.
