BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Coffee pot; Japan, Arita - Hizen, Edo period, eighteenth century.
Ceramic, hand glazed.
It shows wear, fracture line seated on the base and marks of use.
Measurements: 31 x 21 x 14 cm.
Japanese coffee pot made of glazed ceramic from the eighteenth century. The production of this type of pieces reached a great popularity, example of it is another coffee pot that belongs to the collection of the Museum of the ceramics of Kyushu, Japan (nº inv. 050), whose typology and ornamentation is similar to the present piece, although in the case of the piece of the museum it counts on a metal applique as a faucet, placed in the inferior zone. In both cases the typology is the same with a round base and cylindrical body, although flared, with lateral handles in the form of a scroll crowned by a detail in the form of a male character's head. Finally, the work ends with a lid finished with a golden stopper. The ornamental motifs differ from one piece to another, since in this case we find a display of ornamental elements that join a stylized geometric pattern with a blue finish.
The Edo period is a historical period in Japan from 1603 to 1868. Two centuries in which Japan's trade with outside powers developed. Activity that gave rise to a cultural exchange and a greater interest, on the part of foreigners, in the country. In such a way that the exchange of artistic objects that reflected the aesthetics of the country, which to foreign eyes was so unique due to a great lack of knowledge, proliferated.
