Measurements: 189 x 43 cm.
Japanese Kakemono (literally, "painted object") representing the Great Daruma, a Buddhist monk who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries. He is traditionally considered the transmitter of Chan Buddhism in China and its first Chinese patriarch. According to a 17th century apocryphal story found in a manual called Yijin Jing, he initiated the physical training of the monks of the Shaolin monastery that led to the creation of Shaolin kungfu. He is known as Damo in China and Daruma in Japan.
