BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Buddha. Burma, kingdom of Ava, XVII-XVIII centuries.
Bronze.
Brown patina.
Good condition for its age.
Measurements: 33,5 x 15 x 9 cm.

Bronze of quality and fineness representing Buddha performing the mudra Bhumisparsha. The figure adopts the posture of the lotus flower and performs the mudra that symbolizes that he takes the earth as a witness. We can identify numerous lakshana, iconographic symbols that identify the Buddhas. The first we see is the bun hairstyle, symbol of meditation, of spiritual life (with the Ushnisha inspired by a stupa). Together with the half-closed eyes, a serene face is completed by the sketched smile, symbol of the balance and serenity of a perfect being. The elongated lobes of the ears allude to the large earrings worn by members of the upper classes in India contemporary to Sakyamuni, and represent the concepts of greatness, nobility and wisdom. The bhumi sparsha mudra ('gesture of touching the Earth', being bhumi: 'the planet Earth'; and sparsha: 'to touch') represents the moment when Buddha solved the problem of ending suffering when he was under the Bodhi tree.
