BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Nedundu slit drum. Mangbetu ethnic group. Democratic Republic of Congo, 20th century.
Wood, tapestry nails.
Measurements: 87 cm x 43 cm.

The slit drum known as "Nedundu" is a traditional musical instrument of the Mangbetu culture, originating from the northeast of the current Democratic Republic of Congo. This object is not only a musical instrument, but also a cultural and artistic element loaded with meaning in the Mangbetu traditions. It is made of carefully carved solid wood. It is characterized by a longitudinal indentation that acts as the resonance area when struck with mallets or sticks. The Mangbetu are known for their artistic sophistication, and this is reflected in their instruments. The specimen shown here includes nail decorations that combine geometric motifs and synthetic representations of human silhouettes. The decorations sometimes evoke the characteristic elongated Mangbetu hairstyles associated with the elite and aesthetics of the group. The Nedundu drum plays a central role in community ceremonies and spiritual rituals. It is used as an instrument of communication, producing sounds that can carry messages over long distances. It also has a social function in events such as births, marriages and funerals. The cleft produces low, resonant tones when struck with drumsticks. By varying the force and position of the blow, the drum generates different tonal nuances.
