The Senufo reed pulley is a traditional object used by the Senufo people, who live mainly in northern Ivory Coast and southern Mali. The Senufo are known for their rich tradition of art and culture, and the heddle pulley is an outstanding example of their craftsmanship, especially in wood carving. Although its purposes are functional, the form of the sheaf pulley is also imbued with symbolic value. The design of the pulleys sometimes reflects the importance of certain Senufo rituals and spiritual beliefs, such as the relationship with the natural world and the intervention of spirits. When the carved figures represent animals, humans or mythical figures, as in the example shown here, they are believed to protect or guide those who use the pulley in their daily activities. The sheave pulley is traditionally used in the processing of grains (e.g., corn or millet) or the lifting of heavy loads. In its most common use, it is employed as part of a traction system, helping to multiply the force to move heavy objects or to turn large millstones.
