BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Amun; Egypt, Lower Egypt, A.D. 664-332,
Bronze.
It has a pedestal made by Kichizo Inagaki.
Stand signed with seal.
Measurements: 18 x 5 x 4 cm; 3 x 13 x 5 x 5 cm (base).
Votive statuette representing the god Amun, standing in a walking attitude with the left leg forward. His naked torso wears the chendjit loincloth, the braided false beard and the ousekh necklace. The ostrich feather is partly missing, as he must originally have been carrying a scepter. Amun was a dynastic god, lord of Karnak in Thebes and of numerous other sanctuaries. Of all the gods of the Egyptian pantheon, Amun was undoubtedly the one who acquired unparalleled renown when he became the highly prestigious dynastic god. It was from the Middle Kingdom, under the reign of Amenemhet I founder of the XII Dynasty, that Amun became the king of the gods and thus "the god of the gods". Amun, king of the gods, lord of the thrones of the Double Earth". With Mut, his goddess, and Khonsu, his son, formed the Theban Triad, one of the most Egyptian theology. To the east of his great temple of Karnak, he had a sanctuary of "Amon-who-listens-to-the-prayers" where he answered oracles, as attested by the "stelae of ears". Ears that his followers addressed to him.
