BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Strigilus; Greece, Hellenistic period, 3rd-2nd century BC.
Bronze.
Intact piece with intact rivets.
It presents old folds.
Measurements: 19 x 13 x 3.5 cm; 2 x 10 x 3 cm (stand).
The strigil was an instrument of curved blade used by Greeks and Romans to clean the body of oil, mainly used by athletes and gladiators, although it was also frequently used in the baths. Despite its functional character, many of them presented some ornamentation as for example this piece. In it we can observe a series of longitudinal lines and channels, located on the back.
Bronze was one of the most widely used materials for tableware and everyday objects in Roman times, and was even used to make small pieces of furniture, embossed and cast, such as the brazier from the temple of Isis in Pompeii, supported by four feet in the shape of a feline claw. Bronze was also used in most of the pieces of armor worn by soldiers in parades.
