Winged figure of Tanagra. Ancient Greece, Magna Graecia, 4th century BC.

Beautifully moulded and draped hollow terracotta votive figure, depicting a young man standing with a pair of wings. At the end of the 4th century BC, a style of clay modelling known as the "Tanagra style" developed in the city of the same name.
In these figures the classical composition of the body disappears. One leg is placed slightly to one side, either forwards or backwards. The arms no longer hang rigidly alongside the body, as in the Archaic or Classical period, but rest on the belly, chest or back, or on the hips.
