Château Coutet is one of the oldest producing vineyards in Sauternes, sometimes cited as a twin of Barsac's other Premier cru estate, Château Climens. Its history dates back to 1643 when Charles le Guerin, Monsieur de Coutet, acquired the estate. In 1977, the Baly family acquired the property and are the current owners. In 1994, Coutet signed an agreement with Philippine de Rothschild giving exclusive distribution rights to "Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. Located between the Garonne and Ciron rivers, Château Coutet benefits from a microclimate whose autumn fogs are necessary for the spread of Botrytis cinerea. The vineyard area extends over 38 hectares planted with 75% semillon, 23% sauvignon blanc and 2% muscadelle grape varieties.
