Luis Ferrant y Llausás came from a family of artistic tradition. He was brother of the painter Fernando Ferrant y Llausás and uncle and teacher of Alejandro Ferrant y Fischermans. Although he was born in Barcelona, he moved to Madrid to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando under the tutelage of Juan Antonio Ribera. In 1840, he received a scholarship from his protector, the Infante Sebastián Gabriel Burbón, to study in Rome, where he went with his brother Fernando. After the death of his brother Fernando, he married his widow and became tutor and teacher of his nephew Alejandro. He was appointed court painter to Queen Isabella II, which gave him the opportunity to portray the royal family. He also collaborated in the redecoration of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez. His dedication to the crown was extreme and he died at the moment when Isabel II lost the throne.
