Pedro Almodóvar Caballero (1949, Calzada de Calatrava) is one of the most influential directors of Spanish cinema, internationally recognized for his unique and provocative style. He has won two Oscars, a Golden Lion at Cannes, and multiple Goya Awards. His career took off in the 1980s with the founding of the production company El Deseo and films such as La ley del deseo (1987) and Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (1988), which brought him international recognition.
In 1999, his Todo sobre mi madre won the Oscar for best foreign film. Over the years, he has worked on acclaimed films such as Hable con ella (2002), Volver (2006) and La piel que habito (2011), which have established him as one of the great filmmakers of the 21st century. In 2020, Pain and Glory earned him Oscar nominations.
Almodóvar is known for his provocative themes, often related to identity, transgression and family relationships. His style has evolved from an experimental phase to a more introspective one, but always with a strong emotional charge and a critical look at society.
In addition to his success in film, he has been an active political figure, supporting the Spanish left and the LGTBI community. He has also been criticized by some conservative sectors due to his representations and political militancy.
