BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
"Cirque d'ete - Tous les Soirs - Paris en Ballon", ca. 1888.
Lithograph poster on paper.
Measurements: 123 x 87 cm; 129 x 93 cm (frame).
Built in 1841 in front of the Rond-Point theater, the Champs-Elysées circus presented its show from May to September, hence its name Cirque d'été (summer circus). Thanks to its innovative and avant-garde performances, it became a pastime for the working class.
Poster art was a turning point for advertising in the early 20th century. Due to the great demand, many painters expanded their business to make advertisements for circuses, traveling troupes and municipal festivals that visited their cities, as well as advertising for beverages and liquors, perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and other products.
