"The railroad workers were one of the groups that suffered the Francoist repression with more ferocity. The trade union organizations -FNIF (CNT) and SNF (UGT)- were decimated, and practically all the staffs of the railway companies were purged, thousands of workers were sanctioned, and the whole was stigmatized. At the same time as this labor repression was applied, hundreds of workers were murdered or imprisoned, and many more had to go into exile. Women railroad workers were specifically repressed because of their gender. And several thousand prisoners were used as slave labor in the reconstruction of railway infrastructures," the Renfe administration, CCOO and UGT state on the website Memoria Histórica Ferroviaria.
