BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
17th century Andalusian school.
"St. Andrew with the cross".
Oil on canvas attached to board.
Presents faults and restorations.
Measurements: 49 x 39 cm; 61 x 50 cm (frame).
The present canvas shows St. Andrew kneeling in front of the cross in a cross on which he will be crucified by order of the proconsul Aegeas. The most popular attribute of St. Andrew is precisely this cross, although until the 15th century he is most often depicted crucified on a normal cross. Sometimes a net full of fish is used as a second attribute, since he was adopted as patron saint by freshwater fishermen, fishmongers and rope makers who provided the fishermen with rope for the nets.
