DESCRIPTION
"TONY STUBBING"; STUBBING, Newton Haydn (England, 1921-1983).
Untitled, 1963.
Ink drawing on paper.
Signed and dated at lower right.
Measurements: 31.5 x 23 cm; 43 x 33 cm (frame).
Drawing of strong and marked strokes, with abundance of straight lines and angles (which gives the composition a certain strength), formed by a series of geometric elements and forms close to abstract art. The present work was made when Stubbing had already participated in the meeting at the Altamira Caves.
Tony Stubbing was an English artist known, among other things, for participating in 1949 along with Mathias Goertiz, Eduardo Saura and Joan Miró, in a meeting at the Altamira Caves, viewing the prehistoric paintings, held to discuss the direction of contemporary art after World War II. The short-lived "Altamira school" that was born here left a deep impression on Stubbing, who put his brushes aside five years later and created paintings based on hundreds of palm prints and lines created with his hands and fingers.
