The subject of the military scenes was one of the most worked by the painters of the middle and end of the nineteenth century.
Juliusz Fortunat Kossak was a Polish historical painter and master illustrator who specialized in battle scenes, military portraits and horses. His preferred technique was watercolor, both in small and large format. He was the forerunner of a Polish school of battle scene painting, whose main theme revolved around what most concerned Poles who opposed the military occupation of their country. He was the author of more than a dozen panoramic paintings depicting Polish cavalry in combat and military actions against foreign invaders.
