Francisco Díaz Carreño was a Sevillian painter of the XIX century specialized in the portrait, although he also cultivated the genre painting and made several copies of Spanish masters. He trained with Federico de Madrazo at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and in 1862 he went to Rome to further his studies thanks to a scholarship. He was assistant professor of drawing at the Conservatory of Arts in Madrid, and frequently attended the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, being awarded with honorable mention in 1856 and third medal in 1864 and 1867, a prize he also won in Seville in 1868. He is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Royal Academy of History in Madrid, the Museum of Fine Arts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the San Telmo in San Sebastian and other public and private collections.
