Italian sculptor of the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, Giovanni de Martino was trained in the Real Istituto di Belle Arti in Naples, and his teachers were Stanislao Lista, Giocchino Toma and Achille d'Orsi. In the early years of his career he mainly depicted figures of young fishermen, a subject inherited from his teacher d'Orsi and Vincenzo Gemito. Later he focused his work on pensive, sad, abandoned and suffering children's figures. From 1900 onwards he became known through numerous national and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale (1906, 1922, 1924 and 1928), the exhibition of the Fascist Syndicate of Fine Arts of Campania (1929) and the Universal Exhibition of Paris in 1900, where his bronze "Pescatore di locuste" was awarded a prize. He is currently represented in the Galleria Regionale d'Arte Moderna of the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples, as well as in various private collections.
