JOAQUIM CHANCHO (Riudoms, Tarragona, 1943).
"Petit esgrafiat negre", 1975.
Mixed media on canvas.
Signed, dated and titled on the back.
Measurements: 54 x 46 cm.
Joaquim Chancho began his training in Reus, where he studied drawing and sculpture. Later he completed his studies, thanks to a scholarship, at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi in Barcelona, where he later became a teacher. After finishing his studies he travels around Spain and visits Paris. Chancho develops a rigorous work, based on the dialogue between gesture, writing and synthetic structures. The expressive essence of his production arises from rhythm and repetition that, depending on the complexity of the design, is complemented with fragments and interruptions. Chancho is currently a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, where he received his doctorate in 1992, and has exhibited in museums and galleries internationally with exhibitions at the Joan Miró Foundation, the Centre d'Art Santa Monica, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Ibiza, the Museum of Art of Tarragona, the Rufino Tamayo Museum in Mexico, and in 2003, a major retrospective at the Sala Tecla in Hospitalet de Llobregat. He has received numerous prestigious awards for painting and drawing, including a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, and the first prize for painting at the Tarragona Biennial in 1987. His work can be found in the collections of the Fundació La Caixa, MACBA and the Generalitat de Catalunya among others.
