This interesting carpet presents figurative decoration starring four knights mounted on their horses. These are arranged symmetrically in the center of the red field of the carpet. While the upper and lower area has gussets with geometric motifs and other smaller ones where kufic writing can be seen.
Caucasian rugs have a long history dating back to the 2nd century B.C. They became popular in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, and were often used in wealthy homes and palaces. Caucasian rugs remain popular today and are prized for their beauty, quality and craftsmanship. Shirvan rugs are woven in Azerbaijan and are considered to be among the finest rugs in the Caucasus. They are densely knotted and very fine, with many small medallions consisting of geometric shapes, side by side, placed in the center of the carpet. Stars, diamonds and small animal figures are some of the most common features of Shirvan rugs. The predominant color of the rugs is red and blue with cream-white wool in its natural color on the sides.
