This table clock, dated circa 1900, represents an exquisite decorative piece that combines art, technique and functionality, characteristic of the eclectic taste of the time. The main structure is made of gilded and patinated calamine, with Belgian black marble applications that provide an elegant and sophisticated contrast. The Paris machinery, renowned for its precision, is accompanied by a Brocot suspension, an innovative 19th century mechanism that regulates the pendulum with great accuracy.
The composition features the figure of a seated woman with a serene expression, accompanied by a child, probably an allegory of motherhood or innocence, in tune with the romantic and symbolic aesthetics of the period. The figures, with a dark patina finish, merge with the golden body of the clock, creating a play of textures that highlights the delicacy of the folds of the garments and expressions. The engraved vegetal motifs and the female mask on the front reinforce the neoclassical influence, alluding to nature and the idealization of the human figure. This piece not only fulfilled a practical function, but was also conceived as a luxury object intended to embellish the bourgeois interiors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
