BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Candy Marchand" table clock. Empire period, ca. 1810.
Gilt bronze and green patinated.
Porcelain dial, signed "Norman, à Paris".
Measurements: 44 x 27 x 15 cm.

Sculptural clock typology "Candy Marchand", Empire period. A cupid worked in round bulk holds a box with a handle that emulates baskets formerly carried by street vendors in the cities of Europe, especially in Paris. In the center of the box is the clock face, made of white porcelain with black Roman numerals and gold hands. The open wings of the god of love have been embossed with great care, a delicate work that extends to the turned legs and the softness of the bust. A frieze carved in bas-relief decorates the pedestal, showing several frolicking putti.

The Candy Marchand is a period clock from the French Empire, famous for its design inspired by 19th century Parisian peddlers. This clock has a bronze base and usually depicts one of these vendors in scenes reminiscent of the markets and streets of Paris. These clocks were popular for their detailed ornamentation and were part of the tradition of the "cries de Paris", the characteristic cries of vendors in the squares. The style and fine details of these clocks make them collector's items of great historical and artistic value.
