The Cartier Santos was introduced in 1911 and is considered the first wristwatch for men. It was designed by Louis Cartier and named after aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, who used early prototypes of this watch during his flights.

The square case design was unique for its time, and the exposed screws around the bezel held the crystal in place, as well as being intended to resemble the legs of the Eiffel Tower. Coupled with a highly legible dial, it allowed early pilots to quickly read the time in the crowded, open airplane cockpits of the era.

Over time, Cartier modified both the design and the name several times, adding subseries to the Santos collection. In 1978, the Santos de Cartier, which featured an integrated steel bracelet, was launched as part of the luxury sports watch trend pioneered by Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.

In 1987, in response to the quartz crisis, Cartier introduced the Santos Galbee, which was battery-operated and featured a more rounded case shape. In the mid-2000s, Cartier continued the trend of oversized watches with the Santos 100, a robust and modernized model with a lot of presence on the wrist. Finally, in 2018, Cartier returned to its roots by launching a watch that revisited the original design, incorporating elements from previous versions throughout the century and calling it simply Santos.
