BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Desk clock; Paris, second half of the nineteenth century.
Marble and gilded bronze.
Presents breakage in the bezel, restored pendulum and loss of key.
Measurements: 31 x 24 x 11 cm.
French table clock made of marble and gilded bronze. The sculptural concept of Greco-Roman inspiration is characteristic of the time and is evident in this piece. The clock presents the ornamental part in gilded bronze and the structure in marble. The piece consists of a base supported by four claw-shaped legs located at the corners. A couple formed by a young woman and a little love, worked in round bronze, flanks the clock case. The lady's tunic adheres to the body emphasizing the anatomical harmony and folds in sensual draperies. The vegetal ornaments, in this context, become symbols of fertility and abundance. In the center stands the clock case, which houses a white dial bordered by a garland. The numerals are Roman numerals in black and the hands are gilded with openwork.

COMMENTS

The bezel is broken, the pendulum has been replaced and the key is missing.
