BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Sèvres clock; JEAN JACQUES GAVELLE (circa 1725 d. 1798), c. 1790.
Biscuit porcelain, marble and mercury gilt bronze.
One of the legs is not well anchored and the glass shows breakage. The base has damage caused by xylophagous.
Measurements: 42 x 28 x 16 cm.
This biscuit table clock has the signature "Gavelle à Paris" on the dial, alluding to one of the most renowned watchmakers in Paris, whose legacy continued thanks to his children. The watch that we show, presents a design of sculptural character with marble base, adorned with gilded bronze appliques. On it is established the body formed by four porcelain hypogryphs that support the clock case. The center has a dial with Arabic numerals in black with gilded openwork hands. On the case a female figure dressed in the classical manner crowns the composition.
Originally founded in Vincennes in 1740, the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres was transferred to this location in 1756. One of the main European porcelain factories, the Manufacture was successively named after different political regimes: royal, imperial and national manufactory. Still in activity today, the firm continues to edit the objects created since 1740, although its current production is largely oriented towards contemporary creation. The Manufacture de Vincennes was founded with the support of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, with the idea of creating pieces for the court and to compete with the porcelain productions of Meissen and Chantilly.'
