BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Charles X clock; Paris, c. 1820.
Gilt bronze.
It shows wear to the gold and restorations.
It is in running condition.
Measurements: 52 x 25 x 14.5 cm.
Table clock entirely made in gilded bronze with a sculptural conception, as the base sits as a pedestal with Ionic columns flanking the sides and a relief featuring the figures of Venus, Cupid and Apollo. It is a piece in the Charles X style, hence the coexistence of neoclassical and Empire features with a 19th-century ornamental sense, especially visible in the upper part of the clock. The base, on the other hand, is typical of the early 19th century, with a rounded, sharply geometric volume, with sharp edges, in the Empire style, although with a greater ornamental accent, especially visible in the decorations in relief that adorn the front of the base.
The style of Charles X lasted from 1818 to 1834, during the Bourbon Restoration. The aesthetic was adapted to softer forms, clearly influenced by the Empire style, but with a clear adaptation to smaller formats.
