The Simplo Filler Pen Company was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 1908. These early instruments were of the "Safety" type, dropper-filled and with retractable nib. The 14-karat gold nib had the word "SIMPLO" engraved in bas-relief, and its breathing hole was heart-shaped. In 1910, the company began producing a similar product line that it called Montblanc.
