As usual in the art of the 19th century, the influence of Neoclassicism is clear in the present work, as well as the use of technical innovations in the field of silver for the decoration of certain elements of the writing. The movement seen in the tray, although very soft, would be reminiscent of earlier works in different styles, an influence that is also frequent in this period.
Emile Hugo was a famous French silversmith who worked in Paris in the second half of the 19th century and whose workshop was located in the Rue des Quatre-Fils. The works of this workshop stand out for their quality and elegance.
