BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Chalice; Possibly Juan Angeli, Barcelona, XVIII century.
Partially gilded silver, embossed and chiseled.
It has punches.
Measurements: 26 x 13,5 x 13,5 cm.
Weight: 420 g.
Alms chalice made of silver with the upper part of the cup gilded. The work follows the baroque models.
The chalices called limosneros or also patriarchs, are a typology of the chalice that was born in the time of Charles I. It was at this time when the custom of offering three chalices to the Child Jesus became popular among the priests of Spain. Until the reign of Alfonso XIII, all the monarchs, on the day of the Epiphany, presented in offering three different chalices, representing gold, frankincense and myrrh, the gifts made by the Magi to the Baby Jesus. Once the ceremony was over, the chalices were either donated to the church or given by the kings or by the major almoner to convents or private individuals.
