The Alicante artist José Pedro Alonso Miralles offers poignant comments on today's society. His work narrates his daily encounters with a violent and corrupt reality; his distrust in the institutions and the fragility of life. His world is inhabited by grotesque Kafkaesque creatures with elongated limbs and clawed feet: anthropomorphized insects, strange mechanized beings, phallic symbols. They are our worst nightmares come true and, as we contemplate them, we can only look on in horror. Alonso Miralles lifts the veils of illusion that cover reality, exposing it as living, pulsating flesh. There are no more lies and no way out. We are trapped, like the three soccer players in "Champions", whose arms are missing; and we are alone and helpless, like the man in "Self-Portrait", who begs for alms in the street. The surrealist paintings of Alonso Miralles are like Cassandra's premonitions: truths that we prefer to ignore, because they are too scary to contemplate. José Pedro Alonso Miralles has exhibited repeatedly at Agora Gallery in New York, and at the New York AGI Fine Art fair, Summer city Idyll, in 2024.
