BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

"ELENA GAGO", ELENA FERNÁNDEZ GAGO (La Coruña, 1940-2011).
"Table with vase and fruit bowl".
Mixed media on board.
Signed in the lower margin.
Measurements: 65 x 55 cm; 80 x 70 cm (frame).

Gago's style is characterized, as we can see in this interior composition, by a marked poetic character that seeks to express the metaphysics of space through the essentiality of form. She places objects in dialogue with each other, in flat colors and rounded contours, exempting every domestic corner from ornamentation.
Considered as one of the main artists of the plastic arts in A Coruña in the twentieth century, Elena Gago was part of the generation that started the renewal of Galician painting in the sixties, which included painters such as Mercedes Ruibal, María Antonia Dans or María Victoria de la Fuente, among others. At first, Gago was formed by the hand of the painter Dolores Díaz Baliño, to later move to Madrid, where he entered the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando and where he attended classes taught at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. It was in the sixties when he achieved greater prestige, a fact that led him to exhibit his works in different cities both in Spain and Europe. In this way, Germany, Belgium, the United States or Japan were some of the different countries that witnessed his success, in which he captivated both the public and the specialized press and which led to his work being acclaimed by important personalities of the time, such as the professor Camón Aznar or the writer Camilo José Cela. His work is present in national and international collections, as well as in the María José Jove Foundation, among others.
