Graduated in Fine Arts by the University of Barcelona, Mercedes Laguens lives in Palma de Mallorca since 1978. She made her individual debut in 1976, and since then she has shown her work in several Spanish capitals, as well as in Washington D.C. and Havana. He has also collaborated with the magazines "Literradura" and "Taller Llunàtic". Laguens develops a language halfway between figuration and abstraction, deeply lyrical and based on the conceptual, combined with a clear prominence of color. In addition to painting, she has cultivated engraving, woodcut and sculpture, being widely recognized in these fields as well. So is her literary activity, indissolubly linked to her plastic creation. In fact, her work is a multidisciplinary ensemble in which there is room for all kinds of influences, references and allusions, always nourished by new interests and inspirations. Since his first individual exhibition (La Tagüara, Zaragoza), Laguens has held personal exhibitions in outstanding galleries such as Ovidio in Madrid (1986), Pelaires in Palma (1991), Barbasán in Zaragoza (1991), Parés in Barcelona (1995) or Le Dôme in Port Vendres (France, 2002), and also in centers such as the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró (1995) or the Centre de Cultura Sa Nostra (1996), both in Palma. In recent years she has had solo exhibitions with ABA Art Contemporani in Palma and Ibiza (2009, 2010, 2012). Also, this artist has taken part in various group exhibitions and fairs, from 1984: "Homage to Sonia Delaunay" at the Sala 4 Gats in Palma (1986), ARCO (1988, 1995), "Col-lecció Testimoni" at the Sala Sant Jaume in Barcelona (2993), Estampa (1994, 1999), "Escultures de pintor, una veritat possible", at the Casal Solleric in Palma (2001) or "Artistes contemporanis per a Georges Sand" at the Benàssar in Madrid (2005). Laguens was awarded a scholarship by the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró in 1993 (Joan Miró's engraving workshops), 1995 (to work in printmaking in Edinburgh) and 1998 (stay in Milton Keynes, England), and has been awarded with honorable mention in the Premi Especial Pilar Juncosa i Sotheby's of the same foundation (1998) and with the same award in the Premi Ciutat de Palma (2002). She has several publications, and is represented in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the La Caixa collection, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the City Council of Palma de Mallorca, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Sa Pobla, the IberCaja and CAI collections and in several Mallorcan Ministries.
